7 Ways For Professional Counselling To Empower Single Mums

As a single mum counsellor, I know counselling can be a valuable resource, offering a range of benefits that can help build confidence, resilience, and overall well-being. Not just because it is my job but because I have experienced the benefits on my own skin. It is a practice I have utilised throughout my life, forming a deep appreciation towards it, so much so that I now use it to help others.

As a single mum, I know being a single mum is no easy feat. It’s a role that comes with many challenges and can be overwhelming. Whether you’re a single mother by choice or circumstance, you know all too well the daily struggles. The list of demands can seem endless, from balancing work and parenting responsibilities to finding emotional support and navigating co-parenting relationships.

That’s why professional counselling can be beneficial, offering unique tools and strategies to transform your life. From providing a safe space to address emotional challenges to developing self-esteem and nurturing deep healing, it can help in many ways.

Defining Counseling

Counselling is often misunderstood, and the thought of seeking a counsellor’s help can be intimidating for many. However, it’s important to remember that therapy does not indicate something is wrong with you. In fact, counselling can be beneficial for most people during challenging times in their lives.

It is a powerful form of therapy that offers a safe and supportive space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It’s like having a trusted but not invested friend who helps guide you through life’s challenges with understanding and expertise.

During a counselling session, you work with a trained therapist who listens attentively and offers guidance without judgment. They are there to support you as you face the difficulties that arise. It’s a collaborative process where you and the therapist work together to address your concerns, gain new insights, and foster personal growth.

Through active listening and thoughtful questioning, the therapist creates an environment where you can freely express yourself and gain a deeper understanding of your experiences. It’s a place where your voice is heard, and your emotions are validated. Together, you’ll explore your strengths, unravel complex emotions, and develop practical strategies to overcome obstacles.

It’s important to remember that each counsellor has their own approach and style, so finding the right fit is crucial. Some individuals prefer a more supportive and empathetic approach, while others benefit from a more direct and solution-focused style. It’s all about finding a counsellor who creates a comfortable and trusting client environment.

Here at Single Mama Way, I acknowledge and validate your pain and encourage you to find a way forward. So as not to dwell but lift and carry you forward. Importantly, all counselling sessions are confidential, meaning that what is discussed within the therapeutic relationship remains private, providing a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings openly.

So how does it help?

Here are just seven ways counselling can help. There are more, but we only have 5 min.

  • Gain an objective viewpoint: Counseling allows you to discuss your current challenges with a trained and objective professional. While open communication with friends and loved ones is generally helpful, there are instances when sharing your feelings with a therapist can offer a more comforting and secure environment.
  • Clarify your feelings: Many individuals start therapy feeling confused and unable to identify their emotions accurately. A mind like a twisted pretzel of emotions. A counselling therapist is akin to having your own emotional yoga instructor. They’ll guide you through the poses of self-reflection, helping you stretch your emotional muscles and find your centre. Through the therapeutic process, you can explore particularly troubling emotions and work towards resolving them.
  • Improve communication: Therapy can teach you how to express your emotions effectively to others. By learning to communicate honestly and genuinely, you can enrich your relationships and increase your chances of success in various aspects of your life. Paying more attention to your feelings and sharing them with others will help you attain greater fulfilment and live authentically.
  • Experience freedom and stress relief: Counselling can be an incredibly freeing and stress-relieving experience. It provides a safe space where you can express yourself without fear of repercussions. Talking with a therapist can liberate yourself from psychological pain and unload the burden of negative emotions. Therapy is a sanctuary for many individuals when they feel overwhelmed by negativity, making it an excellent stress reliever.
  • Focus on yourself: When you attend therapy, the session centres entirely on your well-being. Your time with a counsellor is devoted solely to you, and you are encouraged to speak openly and honestly. Single mums are rarely free to do so, knowing their potentially emotionally skewed views will be heard objectively and without judgment.
  • Gain valuable insights: Engaging in counselling allows you to have meaningful conversations about yourself with a non-judgmental and objective professional. This level of attentiveness enables you to become more self-aware and introspective. You may experience “Aha” moments as you share your struggles and gain a deeper understanding of your motives and aspirations. By developing insight and awareness of your feelings, you can prioritise what is truly important to you and make choices that align with your desired life path.
  • Cultivate your strengths: Therapy can help you develop and enhance your confidence in leading a healthy and fulfilling life. It is your personal gym for the mind, where you can flex your mental muscles and build your emotional biceps. Your counsellor is like a trainer, gently pushing you to lift the weights of self-belief and self-care. Helping you uncover your inherent strengths and discover strategies to overcome challenges. Before you know it, you’ll be strutting through life with the confidence of a superhero mum, cape not required.

Counselling Misconceptions

In my time as a health professional, I have encountered a lot of pushback when it comes to getting counselling support, mainly due to some unfounded misunderstandings. Let’s clarify them now.

  • It is not a sign of weakness: Seeking counselling does not mean you are weak or incapable. In fact, it takes courage to recognise when you need support and take steps to improve your well-being. It demonstrates your strength and determination to create a better life for yourself and your loved ones.
  • It is not about being “crazy”: Counseling is not solely for those experiencing severe mental health issues. It is for anyone who wants to enhance their emotional well-being, overcome challenges, or gain a new perspective on life. You just need the desire to grow and thrive.
  • It is not about being judged: Counselors are trained professionals who strive to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for you. Their role is to listen, support, and guide you without passing judgment. So, feel free to open up and share your thoughts and feelings; your counsellor is there to help, not criticise.
  • It is not a quick fix: Counseling is not a magic solution that instantly solves all your problems. It is a process that requires time, effort, and active participation from you. Think of it as a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, where you gradually make positive changes in your life. Patience and consistency are essential.
  • It is not just about talking: While talking and expressing your thoughts and feelings are crucial aspects of counselling, it is not the only method used. Depending on your needs, techniques and interventions, such as mindfulness exercises, cognitive-behavioural strategies, or creative therapies, may be used.
  • It is not a permanent commitment: Engaging in counselling does not mean you are obligated to continue indefinitely. You can decide when you feel ready to end your therapy journey. Counselling can be a diverse and enriching experience. It is a valuable tool that can provide you with skills and insights that last a lifetime, well after the sessions have ended.

To sum up, counselling is a beneficial tool that can assist any mum, regardless of her background or struggles. It is an active step towards personal development, uncovering oneself, and enhancing emotional wellness. It presents an opportunity to invest in your well-being and cultivate a more joyful and satisfying life.

Therefore, release any misconceptions, embrace the possibilities, and view counselling as an invaluable resource on your single mum journey towards the life you deserve.
